Hearing protection technology excites market

Since launching its smart hearing protection technology into the aviation industry at Avalon this year, Perth-based Sensear has made significant business gains with airlines, ground handlers and even manufacturers. And that’s despite the attention the technology has attracted in other industries such as resources and construction.

The unique Sensear devices permit communication in high-noise environments, but without loss of situational awareness.

Sensear CEO Justin Miller says that, “From an aviation standpoint we are getting some really good traction, with businesses such as Qantas recognising that using our equipment their people can communicate effectively, they are aware of their surroundings, and it has an effect not only on safety but also on productivity. And it’s across all parts of aviation, from the ramp to engineering to pushback operations.

“Using pushback as an example, traditionally the pushback driver is only in communication with the pilot, but with our device he can talk to anyone walking with him perhaps controlling the pushback – and importantly they are both aware of their surroundings as well, not isolated from the rest of the airport environment.”

Sensear is already doing business with Qantas and Virgin Blue in Australia, as well as being engaged in trials with United Airlines and US Airways offshore. But significantly, the technology is also in use with Boeing in the US on assembly lines.

“There are obviously many more aviation prospects,” Miller says, “simply because of the uniqueness of the product and its particular effectiveness in typical aviation environments.”

Sensear has recently engaged successfully in a capital raising initiative to support business growth across industries and around the globe.

“The solution for us is building a network of partners in the distribution  sense to take it to a wider market,” Miller  says. “In the industrial and safety space, globally one is suported by safety distributors with established clientele, including aviation companies.”
