Australian Airports Association names high achievers for past year.

Australia's best airports for 2010-11 received public recognition last night at a dinner held to celebrate the close of the AAA's 2011 Convention.

The gala event in Brisbane, attended by more than 500 people, was also marked by the tributes paid to retiring AAA chairman John McArdle, who will be succeeded by Brisbane Airport's Stephen Goodwin.

Adelaide Airport took out the award for Capital City Airport of the Year on the night, recognised for its Runways and Taxiways Overlay Project.

The other award winners were:

* Major Airport of the Year: a tie between Newcastle Airport and Sunshine Coast Airport

* Regional Airport of the Year (50,00 to 500,000 pax): Geraldton Airport

* Regional Airport of the Year (fewer than 50,000 pax): Parkes Airport

* Non-certified Airport of the Year: Hunter Valley Airport at Cessnock

* Corporate Project of the Year: Airbiz (Qantas Next-Gen Check-in Project)

* Avation Personality of the Year: a tie between retired Adelaide Airport CEO Phil Baker and Tamworth's Michael Dubois

* Top Executive at a Capital City Airport: Canberra's Matthew Brown
